How do you know writing is a part of you? Somethingyou HAVE to do? After four years of writing and editing I still get butterflies when I finally have a few hours of unhindered writing time, which with a newborn can be hard to come by. The butterflies today reminded me of how important it is to make time daily. Honestly, I think my soul needs it.
My baby’s doctor said to keep doing what you are passionate about because happy parents are important for any baby’s well being. This, of course, made me love the man instantly.
Almost everyone (not including my wife, thank God) has made a comment about how I might as well give up writing because when you have a baby “your life will never be the same.”
Really? Babies change your life? What sage advice this was for me from the world’s wisest people. My son has changed my life for the better. He has given me new inspiration and someone to write damn good stories for. And when he is old enough to understand, he will know what it means to have a passion for something.
Forget about the naysayers and do what makes you happy. For me that is writing.
There is no reason to give up doing what you love just because life changes. What message does that send to our kids. Having little ones makes finding time to writer difficult, sure, but, especially with your genre, it gives you some to actually write to! Gotta love that!
Thanks for the post!
Thanks for the response. I might need to learn some of your find-writing-time strategies since you have little ones. Looking forward to seeing you next week at MWW!
Yes, yes, and more yes
Also, LOL, babies change your life? THIS IS SUCH NEW NEWS.
And it is amazing how many people say it. I just respond with the evil eye
Those same people, who wonder where you’ll find the time, may spend five hours every evening watching TV, or they may nap every Sunday afternoon, or maybe they waste several hours a day on Facebook. I’m not knocking those things — I’m a little jealous, actually, since I’ve never learned to just relax (I’m a little obsessive) — but I’m just saying we can find time for what we love. I think it’s awesome how devoted you are — to the writing, yes, but to your wife and baby. They’re the lucky ones. Writing doesn’t take away from them, unless you let it. And it’s obvious to even the most casual observer how much you love them. It teaches your child, like you said, about having passion for something. But it also teaches him how to learn to manage his time, how to set priorities, and the value of working hard, having a strong work ethic and personal ethic. You’re going to be hugely successful — I just feel it — and that’s a GREAT thing you’re doing for them.
Kelly, you rock! Thanks for the support and I’m glad to know that other writers feel the same way sometimes
